Here we are
Wow! I didn't realize how small it would be in here. I wonder if we can put all the members of the Carolina Conspiracy in this one blog.
Let's give it a try, eh?
The Carolina Conspiracy is a group of North and South Carolina Mystery authors. Most of us have been in theis crazy business for a long time. Together we have like a thousand years of experience writing and publishing mystery. Some of us are publishers as well as writers. Some of us are crazier than others
I'm Joyce Lavene of the Joyce and Jim Lavene duo. We write a few mystery series. Our website is www.joyceandjimlavene.com. When we aren't writing, we like photography. We have a Nikon D-50 that is a dream!
We'll try to answer questions about writing, post experiences with good and bad bookstores, editors and agents. We'll dish on whatever comes to mind.

I'm with John -- haven't done a lot of participating with the Conspiracy (mostly due to time and geographic constraints), but hope that will change shortly and that there'll be some South Carolina events in my area that I can be part of!
But even if I haven't been meeting potential victims (er, readers) face to face, I have been enjoying committing murder and mayhem on paper -- last November I joined a group of completely mad people who proposed to (gulp) write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. (Check out how at www.Nanowrimo.org.) Ye gods! What kind of fool does a thing like that?
Well, apparently this fool. Because I wrote a 74,000-word first draft of a new novel, a thriller with lots of blood and gore (and hopefully some surprises), titled PERCEPTION, in just 18 days (finished the night before Thanksgiving). I'm currently working on a sequel to my 2003 novel, FORWARD TO CAMELOT (check out www.ForwardtoCamelot.com), which also deals with murder -- but this one on live television.
I guess being mad about my son's middle-school issues is providing lots of fuel for my literary fire!
Being part of The Carolina Conspiracy by blogging makes me feel like I'm more a part of the group, even if I can't make most of the live signings, etc. So I hope to be here often and look forward to hearing from everyone else about murder and other matters that make our blood boil ...

People are always giving me parts of their work (or the whole manuscript) to look at and critique. I always try to look at them. Some people are better at accepting the only thing I have to offer - - my opinion --than others.
Some work is very good. Some is not so good. I try to tell people what I can to help. Everyone who writes wants to be published. It's a whole other world.
It's really nice when people email later and tell me they got published from something I said or did. I'm even mentioned in a few first books.
It makes up for the people who tell me I don't know what I'm talking about after asking me for my opinion.
Hey! You asked for it!

Confusing for a shrink like Dr. Christie McMorrow to log into this blog and of course I have to be careful not to reveal any confidential material about my trauma patients or the cases I deal with as a forensic psychologist on the Maine State Task Force on Violence. I am in trouble again. It wasn't enough that in TWISTED TRUTH I was stalked by a psychopath, but in SKINNED I have to deal with human traffickers. It's a good thing I don't shirk from dark and messy crime scenes. Meet me at www.joanneclarey.com for more information. I'm still up in Maine but will be back sizing up the conspiracy in January at Lumberton.
Oh, the wonderful world of blogging! What a great idea to blog as a group. I tried singular blogging a while back but thought it required too much introspection. And too much introspection revealed all the things I hadn't done--call my mother, finish that chapter, get the birthday present for the party my daughter was going to, etc., etc. This is way cooler.
Carolina Conspiracy members have a talent for quickly turned-over and excellent books. I'm about 1/2 way through book 2 and really thought I'd get a lot done once the kids headed back to school. I just can't get a handle where the hours go! I'm going to schedule more writing time into my day and less time for running errands all over town on grunt work (spent half the day today driving around in search of pirate stickers for my son's Rainwater Regatta Cub Scout book.)
Looking forward to blogging with y'all---

Our Carolina Conspiracy Christmas contest is off and running! We have 11 authors donating books and other items to the contest. It looks like it will be a fun holiday!
Don't forget: the contest is over December 15.
